"How do I water succulents?" This is one of the most common questions from new plant owners. Once you master the core rules, watering succulents becomes straightforward.
Core Principle: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry
How to tell if the soil is dry
- Check the soil: This is the most reliable method. Stick a toothpick or your finger 2 to 3 centimeters deep into the soil. If it comes out dry, it is time to water your succulents.
- Check the leaves: When succulents lack water, their leaves will turn soft, shriveled or wrinkled. They will plump up again soon after watering.
How to water thoroughly
Pour water slowly onto the soil until excess water drains out from the bottom of the pot. This ensures the entire root system gets sufficient moisture.
Note: Never just moisten the top layer of soil. Shallow watering will prevent roots from growing downwards and harm the plant’s health.
Best time and water quality for watering
- Time: Water your succulents in the early morning or late evening. Avoid watering at midday under intense sunlight, which may scorch the plants.
- Water quality: Rainwater or tap water left to stand for 1 to 2 days is ideal. This helps reduce damage caused by chlorine in tap water.
